Although not much information is available about the culture of the inhabitants of the continent of Australia during its first 53,000 (or more) years, much more is known about the richly diverse cultures of modern Aboriginal Australians. A great deal of Australia’s present day culture has its roots in Europe (mainly the United Kingdom) and the United States of America. It has a diverse contemporary arts scene, which reflects its society, ancient landscape, cultural traditions and a variety of migrant cultures. All branches of the performing arts have strong followings in Australia, and the energy and originality of the all Australian art forms such as films, opera, music, painting, theatre, dance and crafts, are becoming internationally recognised. Australians are passionate about sport, and it plays a very important part in the Australian lifestyle. Most of Australia’s patriotism is expressed through sport. Some popular Australian sports include Australian Rules football, cricket, cycling, hockey, netball, rugby league, rugby union, soccer, swimming and tennis.
