Australia’s formal name is the Commonwealth of Australia, and its capital is Canberra. The form of government used in Australia is a Constitutional Monarchy, because the powers and procedures of the Commonwealth Government are defined by a written constitution, and because Australia’s Head of State is Queen Elizabeth II. There are three levels of Government in Australia: Commonwealth (also known as “Australian Government” or “Federal Government”), State and Local. The Commonwealth and State systems of government are based upon the British Westminster system.
